Professor Byun Hyung-woo of the Department of Chinese Language and Literature published "Grammar dictionary of The Analects" (論語語法詞典) in September 2023 at 商務印書館, a Chinese publisher.
This dictionary analyzes vocabulary and grammar overall by adopting a method that combines the meaning and usage of vocabulary in “The Analects”. The meaning of all single-syllable words and gospel words in 『Theory語 is derived, and the usage of each word, its role in the syntactic structure of the word, its ability to combine words, and the relationship between word meaning and grammar function are described in detail using layer analysis.
In addition, according to each Chinese character, word, and word meaning of the entire “The Analects”, 1593 single-syllable words, 317 joint words, and 70 three-syllable words were included, and 16,000 items were analyzed for grammar. In addition, it contains 20,000 reference examples of “The Analects” and the literature of the pre-Qin period (example text of Hundred Schools of Thought).
The academic value of this dictionary is that it was written using a historical linguistic method that considers the linguistic situation and the linguistic analysis of the text of The Analects itself, while referring to the historical achievements of Qin period language and taking an archaeological method. This is different from the existing commentary on “The Analects”, and its value can be assessed in terms of China's recent academic research trends.
商務印書館 (The Commercial Press (abbreviated as CP)), the managing director who published the book, is the oldest Chinese publisher. It was founded in Shanghai in 1897 and moved to Beijing in 1954, and together with Beijing University, it is called the 中國近代文化的雙子星" (a twin star of modern Chinese culture).
